There is no doubt that the key to maintaining a healthy and beautiful lawn is to take up a regular lawn mowing, watering and fertilizing program. Although, it is important that these nutrients are in fact reaching the soil underneath for promoting grass growth. This is when we add aeration to our lawn mowing practices. The aeration process allows air and water to reach deep beneath the lawn’s surface. It is important for the soil and lawn to breathe for proper growth. In today’s blog, I will walk you through the benefits of lawn aeration.
What is Aeration?
Lawn aeration refers to the process of piercing small holes into the soil. These holes allow the passage of water and nutrients to reach the soil surface where they penetrate into the grass roots.
Why is Lawn Aeration important?
Since aerations allow water and nutrients to reach the grass roots more effectively, it promotes faster grass growth. This leads to stronger roots and grass blades that are more resistant to drought and damage. The core reason for aeration is to reduce soil compaction. When the soil is compact there are too many solid particles within that space which disrupts proper circulation of water, nutrients and air. Moreover, an excess amount of thatch or organic debris beneath the surface prevents the grass roots from absorbing these essential nutrients.
Benefits of lawn aeration
- A healthy turf – lawn aeration boosts the health of your turf giving it a lush vibrant look.
- Stronger blades – The access to necessary nutrients, water and air results in the growth of stronger and resistant grass with a deeper root system.
- No more water build up – through aeration, the risk of water running off or accumulation of puddles from rain water is reduced.
- Soil compaction relief – compacted soil can lead to thinning and dead spots or patches. The holes break up the solid and rigid structure of the soil.
When to aerate your lawn?
With warm season grass you should target late spring for aeration. With cold season grass the ideal time would be early spring. On top of that, the best time to aerate your lawn is during the growing season. This is because once the soil plugs are removed, the grass can grow and heal filling up any empty spaces. As for the frequency, aerating once a year is good enough.
Signs that your lawn needs to be aerated
- Low water retention
- Worn out patches
- Thatch build up
- Tendency of water to pool up
Best way to aerate lawn?
There are two ways to aerate your lawn, either going for core/mechanical or liquid aeration. Core aeration will have a quick effect on the soil and the look of the grass but the results are not likely to last for a long time. With liquid aeration the effects do not take place immediately but gives you better and long lasting results. Liquid aeration will cover the entire lawn without posing any damage to new grass. It does a great job at reducing soil compaction by creating a large number of tiny holes instead of bigger uneven punctures. The soil absorbs, retains and disperses the nutrition elements to the areas requiring it the most. When it comes to living green, liquid aeration has no comparison as it is eco friendly introducing biodegradable materials to your turf. Click here to learn more about the two aeration methods.
